Central Texas Council of Government is proud to team up with the University of Mary Hardin Baylor Criminal Justice Program to sponsor an innovative course with the National De-escalation Training Center (NDTC) in De-Escalation Principles & Practice: a 32-hour train-the-trainer program with trainer certificate awarded when you pass this class.

  • Level 1 training includes traditional techniques of procedural justice;
  • Level 2 provides basic crisis intervention;
  • Level 3 augments traditional de-escalation and crisis intervention with rapid personality identification.

The NDTC De-escalation: Principles & Practice course is evidence-based and has increased officer confidence in utilizing de-escalation skills in working with the public.

October 7-10, 2024

With this being a train the trainer course, applicants should be dedicated and comfortable teaching in front of groups.

Day One

8:00 – 9:00 Introduction:
Initial exercise. Overview. Review local law. Certification training levels (Certified trainer, Senior Trainer, Master Trainer – 10 session training review). De-escalation training: importance, purpose, reality. Levels One, Two, and Three de-escalation training.

9:15 – 9:45 The subject and the threat environment. Insiders, outsiders, and situational elements.

10:00 – 11:00 Procedural justice and traditional de-escalation fundamentals. De-escalation tactics, and the relationship to crisis intervention.

11:15 – 12:00 Trauma informed policing (primer) & crisis intervention (primer)

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 2:00 Personality Modeling – DISC Esoterica®

2:15 – 3:00 Personality charts and individual charts

3:15 – 4:00 DISC Esoterica® Behavioral exercises

4:15 – 5:00 Integration of personality with De-escalation, Lightning Round.

Day Two

8:00 – 9:00 DISC Esoterica® Substyles

9:15 – 9:45 Body language and rapid personality identification

10:00 – 10:45 DISC Esoterica® Risk Matrix

11:00 – 12:30 Workbook exercises

12:30 – 1:30 Lunch

1:30 – 2:45 Short exercise on safe distancing. Passive and active threat stages. Maintaining a safe distance.

3:00 – 3:45 Integrating threat stages with rapid personality identification

4:00 – 5:00 De-escalation practice: de-escalation language, responses, interactions

Day Three

8:00 – 12:00 De-escalation scenario planning and development

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 5:00 De-escalation scenario exercises

Day Four

8:00 – 12:00 De-escalation certification. Certified trainer, Senior Trainer, Master Trainer.

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 5:00 De-escalation certification.

Class will be taught by National De-Escalation Training Center, Co-Hosted by University of Mary Hardin Baylor Criminal Justice Program and reported for TCOLE credit by CTCOG.

This course created by the National De-Escalation Training Center (NDTC) is approved by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and certified by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) and is the first and ONLY National Certified training program to incorporate personality modeling and threat stage recognition.
