A hands-on approach to explaining the objectives and legal obligations required when performing a crime scene search. This Intermediate Crime Scene Investigations course provides classroom instruction and interactive scenario-based training using mock crime scenes where officers will take on various roles to collect, process, and investigate evidence.
The week-long course includes the following objectives, as well as others:
- Guidelines for conducting crime scene searches
- Conducting preliminary and follow up investigations
- Understanding the importance of the chain of custody, a final survey of the crime scene, debriefings, and maintaining case files
- Organizing a search action plan
- Establishing a command post and search team
- Learning the considerations of identifying, marking, collecting, and preserving evidence
- Identifying investigative tools and equipment for crime scene searches
- Identifying different classes of evidence
- Taking personal safety precautions when collecting evidence
TCOLE mandates this course for law enforcement officers to become an intermediate level peace officer.
