A hands-on approach to explaining the objectives and legal obligations required when performing a crime scene search. This Intermediate Crime Scene Investigations course provides classroom instruction and interactive scenario-based training using mock crime scenes where officers will take on various roles to collect, process, and investigate evidence.

The week-long course includes the following objectives, as well as others:

  • Guidelines for conducting crime scene searches
  • Conducting preliminary and follow up investigations
  • Understanding the importance of the chain of custody, a final survey of the crime scene, debriefings, and maintaining case files
  • Organizing a search action plan
  • Establishing a command post and search team
  • Learning the considerations of identifying, marking, collecting, and preserving evidence
  • Identifying investigative tools and equipment for crime scene searches
  • Identifying different classes of evidence
  • Taking personal safety precautions when collecting evidence

TCOLE mandates this course for law enforcement officers to become an intermediate level peace officer.
