What inspired you to become a 9-1-1 telecommunicator?
I wouldn’t say I was inspired per se. I started dispatching part-time for a local EMS service to make extra money since I was a single mom with 2 boys.
How long have you been in emergency communications, and what do you love most about it?
I’ve been dispatching since 2000 and made it my career move to full time in 2011. What I love most is the ability to meet people that are like-minded with the desire to serve, protect and help others.
What do you consider your greatest achievement in your career so far?
My greatest achievement is creating a new Communications facility with updated equipment and staffing it with well-trained personnel.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in 9-1-1 communications?
This career is not for everyone. If your looking for money, fame and short hours this in definitely not the career for you. But, if you truly want a fulfilling career knowing that you helped someone in their darkest moments, gave lifesaving instructions to a mother who’s child has stopped breathing or made sure your officers made it through one more shift then this is absolutely the best job ever.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any hobbies or special interests?
I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors. My husband and I go camping and hiking as much as possible. Anytime we get to spend with family and friends is always a blessing.
Tell us a little about your family or home life—any pets, kids, or fun traditions?
My husband and I have been married for 23 years this year. Between the 2 of us we have 4 wonderful children. 3 boys and 1 girl all of which have careers in public service from law enforcement, firefighter and medical services. That also includes each of their spouses so getting together for the holidays can be challenging with everyone schedules. When we do get together it just makes the time even more special. We have 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters that we absolutely adore. We have 2 fur babies Brooke ( Belgium Malinois) and Millie (Terrier) and 4 chickens.
If you could have any superpower to help in your job, what would it be and why?
MINDREADER! If you know you know!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your peers or the community?
Just a heartfelt THANK YOU to all those that have chosen to be a telecommunicator. It takes a special person to do what we do.
